The\u00a0Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles<\/strong>\u00a0(TMNT<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Ninja Turtles<\/strong>) are a team of four\u00a0anthropomorphic\u00a0turtles, who are trained by their sensei,\u00a0Master Splinter, to become skilled\u00a0ninja\u00a0warriors. From their home in the\u00a0sewers\u00a0of\u00a0Manhattan, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles battle petty criminals, evil megalomaniacs, and alien invaders, all while remaining isolated from society at large.<\/p>\n

The TMNT originated in an American comic book published by\u00a0Mirage Studios<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a01984. The concept arose from a comical sketch by\u00a0Kevin Eastman<\/a>\u00a0during a casual evening of brainstorming with his friend\u00a0Peter Laird<\/a>. Using money from a tax refund together with a loan from Eastman’s uncle, the young artists self-published a single-issue comic intended to parody four of the most popular comics of the early 1980s:\u00a0Marvel Comics’\u00a0X-Men<\/em>\/The New Mutants<\/em>, which featured teenage mutants,\u00a0Daredevil<\/em>, which featured ninja clans dueling for control of the New York City\u00a0underworld, and also comics Cerebus<\/em> and Ronin<\/em>.<\/p>\n

What started as a parody comic book launched the\u00a0Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles<\/a> into a world wide marketing phenomenon. Leonardo,\u00a0Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello<\/strong> were found everywhere; children’s television shows, comics, toys, magazines, and more. Compiling and archiving information on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a heavy task, one that this website intends of taking on.
